Kitchen/Dining Area, Master Bedroom & Bath
CREEKSTONE DESIGNS: All the classic challenges of a remodel were present during this project—create more space without an addition; update the style but honor the home’s character; open up the kitchen, but limit the structural impacts; upsize the master bath, but keep the bedroom and storage functionality; update the small hall bath, but manage the investment. And of course, do it for a reasonable cost. These were some of the common challenges encountered during remodels, but they can always be solved with ingenious design and clever construction. So how do you create more space without adding on? Yes, removing walls can work, as we did between the kitchen and the front dining  room, but we also employed space planning tricks of cabinet sizing/layout, clutter hiding zones and purposefully using light to deliver a larger feel. In the kitchen, we actually eliminated a seven-foot window but made the space brighter than before by introducing other natural light sources well as adding key lighting features. The structural impacts were minimized by having the carpenter, interior designer and engineer work together to find efficient cost-friendly solutions. The challenge of upsizing the master bath while keeping the same master suite footprint was solved by intentionally bending some design principles, redirecting the eyes and creating a shower that feels bigger than it actually is. Other techniques included hiding transitions to create the feeling of openness and designing an accent wall with built ins that deliver functionally, but also visually enlarge the room. Overall, creating more with what you have is very possible when the right creativity and practicality are collaboratively working with you.
